AM / FM Radio Emergency Communication In Disasters

Disasters and emergencies change the social fabric of our communities when they strike.  One of the most stressful elements of a disaster is no knowing what has happened, how extensive the devistation is and what emergency responders are advising survivors to do in the aftermath.

Transistor AM / FM Radios and The Emergency Alert System

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States of America, in 1994, changed the emergency broadcast system to the EAS or Emergency Alert System.  The EAS is an organization of television and radio broadcasters that, when asked to do so, stop their regular programming to deliver presidential message live, local area emergency information, and state emergency announcements over their AM / FM Radio frequencies.

When is the EAS Activated?

State and Local Emergencies on Your AM / FM Radio

When a situation posese an extraordinary treat to safety of life and property in a local area.  Examples include but are not limited to tornadoes, flash floods, icing conditions, heavy snows, fires, hazardous materials spills, power failures, industrial accidents, civil disorders and nuclear incidents.

State and Local Sever Weather Watch

When there is a probability of severe weather such as blizzard, high winds or other storms, a severe weather watch is issued on your AM / FM Radio.

Severe Weather Warning

Severe Weather Warnings are issued over your AM / FM radio when severe weather such as a blizzard, high windws or other storms have actually been sighted  or are revealed on radar and it is almost certain that the severe weather will hit the area.
